Durga Saptashati is a part of the Devotional text Devi Mahatmya and it is found in the Markandeya Purana. It was translated by Narayana Teertha and Somadeva Suri between 1860-1890 CE.Markandeya Purana is one of the canonical texts of Hinduism that focuses on Krishna as a formless god, as well as Devi. However, the text also refers to the followers of Durga who can prevent death. The text warns against following any other path than Durga's. It is said that one who practices this path will be freed from rebirth in birth and death, and will eventually reach Upabhava (paradise). Devi Bhagavata has 5 chapters, starting with Chapter II.  Chapter V  "Devi Bhagavata Purana"The story is that when Shri Krishna grew up he went to meet his mother Devaki Padma. His mother gave him a boon that Shri Krishna would always remember her in his heart. He gave the same boon to his brother Balarama. But when he came before his cousin Devaki, she requested Shri Krishna to leave her with a son. So Shri Krishna blessed her that she would be the mother of eight sons named Indrajit, Kamsa, Sankhana, Upendra, Ashvin & Vasudeva. Then he asked her to keep this boon secret and went away to Mathura.Later Devaki was married by Kamsa. The first six children were born as per their blessing but when Devaki's seventh child was born it was Narada Muni who was at the door of Kamsa's palace requesting for food or shelter for three days. He was told that he could only stay in the palace for three days. Kamsa then imprisoned Devaki in a room and Narada Muni was forced to stay in the palace.  When Kamsa started to torture Devaki, Narada Muni attempted to release her from inside the room by breaking a needle hidden inside a bedsheet. The bedsheet broke and when Kamsa tried to catch it Narada Muni ran away from the palace out of Kamsa's house.
